Holden Beach began as land purchased by Benjamin Holden in 1756 and remained in the Holden family for generations as a site for fishing, grazing and later seasonal development. The island saw early 20th-century development as a resort community (the first oceanfront subdivision in Brunswick County), and it incorporated as the Town of Holden Beach in 1969 as access and infrastructure improved.
